Post-lockdown 2020 must be "defining moment in fight against climate change" says CCC


The Committee on Climate Change says that the Government must seize the opportunity presented by the Covid-19 disruption into a defining moment in the fight against climate change. In its annual report to Parliament, the Committee sets out, for the first time, recommendations for actions for each department of government. For road transport, the CCC calls for the full phase-out of petrol and diesel cars, vans and, now, motorcycles too, by 2032 or earlier, and for stronger incentives, plans and clean air zones, to encourage progress in freight vehicles.

Green number plates approved by Government The Government has approved the roll-out of green number plates from Autumn 2020. The Government says the scheme is a part of plans to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. Read more

Government announces ten projects to share in £73.5m funding to cut vehicle emissions

The Government has announced ten projects that will share £73.5m to advance technology to help reduce vehicle emissions. The projects from across the UK will each receive a share of the funding to develop new technology for the next generation of electric taxis, cars and vans – including recyclable batteries, advanced electrical systems and ultra-lightweight components.


International Developments

France and Germany lead EU countries in delivering 'green stimulus' packages; increasing EV subsidies France and Germany have announced plans for major 'green stimulus' packages as the countries emerge from lockdown and seek to get their economies moving again. Other EU countries, including Spain and Holland have also announced revitalisation plans with strong 'green' elements. Read more

First-in-the-word standards for zero emission trucks set in California The California Air Resources Board (CARB) has announced the first rules in the world which aim to require truck manufacturers to ensure the trucks and vans they sell in the state by 2045 wil be zero emission.   Read more

50% of buyers say choosing an environmentally friendly new car is now more important than before A survey commissioned by the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership (LowCVP) and the National Franchised Dealers Association (NFDA) has found that motorists considering a new car are now more concerned about ‘going green’ – with 50% saying that environmental friendliness has become more important to them in the last year. John Lewis to build biomethane filling station as it transitions to low emission trucks The John Lewis Partnership has announced plans to build a dedicated biomethane gas filling station near its HQ in Bracknell to enable its largest heavy goods vehicles to use a low carbon alternative to diesel. John Lewis has also revealed an ambition to stop using fossil fuels across its entire 4,800 strong transport fleet by 2030. Read more
