Stimulate Powered Light Vehicle Market in the UK

Concept Peugeot PLV

L-category vehicles cover a spectrum of powered two-wheelers, such as mopeds and motorbikes, up to tricycles and quadricycles, with motorbikes and scooters occupying largest market share (105,169 Powered Two-Wheeler vehicles in 2018). They are lighter and take up less road space and offer an innovative alternative to M and N category vehicles.

Previous LowCVP projects assessed the potential environmental, economic and societal benefits of Powered Light Vehicles (PLVs) in the UK and concluded there are benefits from developing a market for these vehicles from a consumer mobility and UK industrial strategy viewpoint. However, there remain regulatory and public perception hurdles where further RD&D is required, before mass market uptake of these light-weight vehicles. Working with the Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCIA), the trade body tasked with promoting PLVs, LowCVP will build on previous work to support government, industry and research communities to stimulate the UK PLV market.

Project Management and Stakeholder Engagement

The LowCVP Secretariat will engage with Government departments including BEIS, CCAV, OLEV, academia, supply chain manufacturers and the MCIA.
