Background & Challenges
Low carbon, renewable fuels provide an opportunity for reducing emissions in bus fleets that continue to operate vehicles with internal combustion engines (ICE). This project aims to support operators in reducing emissions by encouraging the adoption of both ultra-low emission vehicles and related technologies, and low carbon fuels. The work will be done in conjunction with existing schemes such as FORS, EcoStars and EST’s Fleet Checks.
The project is a collaboration with the Zemo Partnership Low Carbon Fuel Assurance Scheme being developed by the Fuels Working Group.
Objectives
- To encourage vehicle operators to adopt a holistic approach to cutting emissions from all aspects of their fleet operations
- To encourage the adoption of a life-cycle CO2e analysis approach allowing policy makers and operators to take account of emissions occurring at all stages of the product and fuel life-cycle, including overseas
Actions & Outputs
- Development of a scheme to recognise fleets operating with an overall lower carbon footprint
- Creation of a ‘Low Carbon Vehicle Certificate’ - initially for buses - combining test data from existing certification schemes (e.g. LEB) and sustainable low carbon fuels (e.g. RTFO)
- Development of a ‘Low Carbon Operator/Operation’ certification scheme which can be used to meet statutory requirements for annual company reports
- Zemo Partnership Secretariat facilitated with BWG member collaboration, including vehicle manufacturers, operators, fuel suppliers, government, operators’ associations
