Vivergo Fuels was formed in 2007 as a biorefinery for the future: As a joint venture between AB Sugar, BP and Du Pont, the £350m business makes Vivergo the UK’s biggest bioethanol producer and one of the largest in Europe. Vivergo’s process uses 1.1 million tonnes of locally sourced, feed-grade wheat to produce 420 million litres of Bioethanol, enough to meet around half of the UK’s current demand; and up to 500,000 tonnes of animal feed per year – providing the protein requirement for approximately 20% of UK dairy cows. The Bioethanol produced at the Vivergo plant offers Green House Gas (GHG) savings of over 50% against standard petrol production, the equivalent of taking 180,000 cars off the road each year.
