Around 50% of journeys taken on the Uber app are already made in Hybrid vehicles in London. In addition, through the promotion of services like Uber, we believe the need for private car ownership and use can be reduced - a goal which we can reduce vehicle numbers on the road, in turn reducing emissions. We also believe that the future use of vehicles lies in them being both shared (through services like our uberPOOL service) and low-emission.
Reseach & Development
We recently launched our Clean Air Plan for the UK - a scheme which will help over 25,000 licensed private hire drivers using the Uber app replace their existing diesel or petrol vehicles with low, or ultra-low, emission vehicle models. This will allow Uber to be a fully hybrid or EV service in London (excluding a small number of 6 seat vehicles) by 2020. In order to facilitate this, drivers using Uber will be able to claim a grant of up to £5000 towards the cost of a hybrid or EV.
We will also meet this same standard in 2022 across the country - building towards being 100% EV in London in 2025. Through showing this type of leadership, we believe we can have a big impact in showing how business can lead the way in improving air quality.
