Government announces £37m plan to improve EV recharging infrastructure

The Government has announced plans to provide 75% of the cost of installing new charge points at people's homes, on streets and at railway stations. The package of measures also includes plans to increase the numbers of rapid charge points at strategic locations to make longer journeys in electric vehicles easier.

Government-industry study says hydrogen vehicles could be widespread on UK roads by 2030 

A joint Government-industry study, published by BIS, says that over one and a half million hydrogen-powered vehicles could be on UK roads by 2030. The forecast is made in an interim report commissioned to evaluate the benefits of hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) and ensure the UK is well positioned for their commercial roll-out.

Ricardo-AEA report says EU can achieve 60g/km new car CO2 emissions by 2025 with existing technology

A report commissioned by T&E and Greenpeace suggests the EU can more than halve its existing carbon dioxide emissions from new cars using existing technology. Written by Ricardo-AEA, the report says that with the right mixture of electric, hybrid and conventionally-fuelled cars will enable Europe to reach a target of 60 grams per kilometre from the average new car in 2025.

Biofuels supplies falling short of RTFO targets but sustainability levels and UK content rise

The amount of biofuel sold to the UK market fell to just 3% of total road fuel supplied in the period April to October 2012 according to the latest Government statistics. The fall was a result of a reduction in the supply of biodiesel to the UK market. Of the 631 million litres of renewable fuel supplied, 59% (371 million litres) was proven to be sustainable.

New studies show future impact of land-use change from biofuels development

Indirect land-use change from the use of feedstock-based biofuels will cause an increase in greenhouse gas emissions in the future according to two new studies from the EU's Joint Research Centre (JRC), the Netherlands Environment Assessment Agency (PBL) and Koen Overmars, an independent Dutch consultancy.

Scottish Government announces plans for provision of EV infrastructure throughout Scotland

The Scottish Government has announced proposals worth £2.6m to introduce free installation of home recharging points for electric vehicles throughout Scotland and the provision of public charging outlets within at least every 50 miles on trunk roads. The proposals also include plans to integrate the network of recharging facilities with public transport.

New car fuel economy label extended to electric and hydrogen cars

An amendment to Government regulations means that electric cars for sale in car showrooms must follow those running on petrol and diesel and display a fuel economy label. The LowCVP and representatives of the car industry have developed a design of the label for electric cars, introducing colour-coded elements (as already exist for conventional vehicles) and other information which will appear on labels under the pre-agreed voluntary commitment by industry.

Businesses to be required to report GHG emissions, including transport, from April 2013

From April 2013, all businesses listed on the Main Market of the London Stock Exchange will be required to report their levels of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions including some transport data, both in the UK and overseas. The UK is the first country to make it compulsory for companies to include emissions data in their annual reports and the move will increase the focus on transport-related emissions.

Prime Minister says energy efficiency will be 'motor of green growth'

In a significant intervention, the Prime Minister said that the UK must priorities growth in "green industries" such as energy efficiency and renewable energy. Mr Cameron has recently been criticised by environmentalists for taking a low key approach to environmental issues and has also come under fire from Conservative critics who have campaigned for the watering down of climate targets. In a separate development an amendment to the Energy Bill proposes the early setting of an electricity decarbonisation target for 2030.

£22m venture set up to help small firms commercialise new and low carbon automotive technologies

A new £21.8m initiative aimed at boosting component manufacturing in the automotive sector has been launched. 'The Proving Factory' will be run by Tata Steel and and low-carbon vehicle engineering firm and LowCVP member, Productiv. It has been set up with £13m of Government funds matched by £9m in private investment, will provide a facility for small companies to turn prototype technologies into commercial products.

The LowCVP has published a video to mark the organisation's Tenth Anniversary. Other video materials and resources surrounding the Partnership's Tenth Anniversary and Low Carbon Champions Awards - including keynote speeches and news releases - are now available on the LowCVP website. The LowCVP has received positive feedback in a survey about both events.

Businesses to be offered free advice about introducing hybrid and electric vehicles to their fleets

The Energy Saving Trust is offering a hundred businesses a free review of their fleet operations to help establish whether they could benefit from switching to electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles. The announcement is the latest phase of the EST's Plugged-in Fleets Initiative (PIFI), which is backed by £280,000 of government funding.
