Policy Developments

CCC Chairs write to Prime Minister outlining post-election priorities for tackling climate change The Committee on Climate Change has written to the Prime Minister outlining its assessment of the priorities for the new Government to reduce UK emissions and prepare for climate change. On transport, the Committee calls for rapid progress to be made in the implementation of the manifesto commitment to consult on an earlier phase-out of petrol and diesel cars, ideally by 2030. Madrid climate conference ends with limited progress; but agreement that more urgency is needed

Governments at the UN climate talks in Madrid responded to the growing urgency of the crisis with a partial admission that carbon-cutting targets are too weak, but few concrete plans to strengthen them in line with the 2015 Paris agreement. More than 190 nations and blocs, from the US, China and the EU to the smallest island states, were represented.

Electric Vehicle Energy Taskforce report to be launched on Tuesday January 14 The Electric Vehicle Energy Taskforce will launch the report “Energising Our Electric Vehicle Transition” on Tuesday January 14th in central London. The Taskforce is the widest collaboration between the energy supply, transport and mobility sectors along with government. It has been facilitated by the LowCVP, at the request of government, to maximise the benefits arising from the EV transition for motorists, the energy industry and wider society by capitalising on innovations including smart charging. Delegate bookings are now being taken for the event.  Read more

Road pricing and free public transport essential to tackle climate emergency

A study supported by a consortium of leading NGOs finds that road pricing linked to environmental priorities in the form of an Eco Levy, combined with free public transport are key measures required to tackle the climate emergency.

Government consultation on introduction of 'green' number plates closes on 14 Jan The Government consultation about introducing green number plates "to celebrate and encourage uptake of electric vehicles" will close on 14 January 2020. The Government says that 'green' licence plates mean that the cleanest cars will be easily identifiable, helping their drivers to benefit from local incentives such as free or cheaper parking or even preferential access to some road areas. Electric Vehicle Energy Taskforce - Report Launch: 14th January - IMechE, One Birdcage Walk, London, SW1H 9JJ
The EV Energy Taskforce will be reporting back to Ministers on the findings of the taskforce and the suggested proposals for Government and Industry to adopt in order to ensure that the GB energy system is ready for and able to facilitate and exploit the mass take up of electric vehicles.

LowCVP are holding a joint meeting between the Passenger Car and Innovation Working Groups.

Zero Emission Bus Workshop - Pantograph Charging of eBuses: 20th February - Birmingham Airport
Part of the zero emission fleets workshop series, this workshop will be focusing on the 6 electric Volvo buses deployed by Birmingham Airport that were in part funded by the DfT's Ultra Low Emission Bus Scheme. These buses are charged pantographically by 2 pantograph chargers deployed outside the terminal airport as well as slow charged overnight using CCS2 chargers. Speakers will include:
