IPCC report says choices made now are critical for the future of our ocean and cryosphere


A new, landmark report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) highlights the urgency of prioritizing timely, ambitious and coordinated action to address unprecedented and enduring changes in the ocean and cryosphere (the frozen parts of the planet). It says that extreme sea level events that used to happen once a century will occur every year in many parts of the world by the middle of the century because of global heating.

Policy Developments

Government announces funding for 'greener' buses; £30m for Net Zero projects in Spending Round 2019 Chancellor Sajid Javid, announcing the 2019 Spending Round, said that there will be £200m funding to "transform bus services" and an additional £30m funding to "accelerate progress on developing decarbonisation schemes that will help to move the UK towards its Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions target by 2050".  Read more
A third fewer polluting vehicles entered central London during ULEZ first four months - report An analysis of the early impacts of London's new Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) found that in the first four months of its operation (March – July 2019) there was a reduction of 12,524 older, more polluting, non-compliant vehicles detected in the zone: a reduction of over a third.  Read more

Government promises investment in EVs, trees and nuclear fusion on eve of Conservative Party conference

The Government has promised to invest 'up to £1bn' in a package of measures to tackle the climate emergency including developing electric cars, planting a million new trees and funding the further development of nuclear fusion on the eve of its party conference in Manchester. With a General Election expected soon, the political parties are laying out their pitches in the key areas of policy.


Labour Party announces 2030 net zero aspiration; EV loans, recharging investment The Labour Party has made a raft of policy announcements - which may become General Election manifesto commitments - backing policy measures designed to accelerate the transition to low and zero emission road transport. Zero interest loans for the purchase of electric vehicles, state-sponsored investment in EV recharging infrastructure and three UK-based battery 'gigafactories', public car sharing and scrappage schemes.  Read more

Cross-party Green New Deal calls for actions to help deliver Net Zero by 2030

Cross-party MPs led by the Green's Caroline Lucas and Labour's Clive Lewis have announced plans to table legislation to force the government to bring forward the Net Zero target to 2030 and implement wide-ranging measures to achieve it.

Amazon buys 100,000 electric vans from Rivian in largest ever EV order The online retail giant Amazon has ordered 100,000 fully electric delivery vans from a US start-up company, Rivian, in a deal worth $5 billion. Read more

LowCVP calls for closer integration of life cycle assessment to inform technology choices (LowCVP media release) As electric vehicles start to become mainstream and the contribution of renewable energy to the electricity grid grows, by 2030 over 70% of CO2 emissions from typical new road vehicles could arise during the production – rather than use – phase of the life cycle of a typical vehicle. LowCVP News: First pollution-busting SCR retrofit solution for trucks accredited under CVRAS Scheme

(LowCVP media release) The first selective catalytic reduction (SCR) retrofit solution for conventional heavy goods vehicles has been accredited under the UK’s Clean Vehicle Retrofit Accreditation Scheme (CVRAS), ahead of the introduction of Clean Air Zones in Birmingham and Leeds in 2020.

Auckland transport accelerates low emissions bus uptake...after LowCVP support

Auckland Transport is accelerating the uptake of low emission buses including electric and fuel cell models as part of its transition to a low emissions bus fleet. Auckland is working to a strategy outlined in its 'Low Emissions Bus Roadmap' which builds upon work provided to city strategists by the LowCVP in 2017-18 and which is referenced in the city's Bus Roadmap. 


The Guardian announces changes to use of language around climate, environmental crises

The Guardian newspaper has announced plans for changes to its in-house 'style guide' which mean that the language used to describe climate and environmental issues will be changing. In future, rather than 'climate change' the preferred terms will be 'climate emergency' or 'climate breakdown'. 'Global heating will be preferred over 'global warming'.
