Season's Greetings and 2018 review


As Christmas approaches, it's a time to reflect on what has been another busy and eventful year for the low carbon vehicle agenda. Against the backdrop of the publication of the Government's Road to Zero strategy, the LowCVP has launched several new initiatives and celebrated the Partnership's 15th anniversary at a packed reception in the Houses of Parliament.

International Developments

COP Summit reaches agreement on measures to enact Paris Climate Pact International negotiators reached agreement on a common 'rulebook' for putting the 2015 Paris Agreement into practice. The Katowice Agreement aims to deliver the Paris goals of limiting global temperature to a rise of well below 2 degrees Celsius. However, new figures show that global CO2 emissions are set to reach a new peak in 2018 as transport demand and coal use has grown. Read more

Policy Developments

EU agrees 2030 new car and van CO2 targets EU negotiators have agreed new targets for CO2 emissions from new cars and vans. Under the plans, by 2030, emissions from new cars will have to decrease by 37.5% and for vans by 31%. An interim target of a 15% cut for cars and vans by 2025 is also proposed. Read more

Government funded electric car chargepoints to be 'smart' by July 2019

The Government has announced that all funded chargepoints for electric vehicle use will have to use innovative 'smart' technology from July 2019 in order that they can be remotely accessed and capable of receiving, interpreting and reacting to a signal. Smart charging has the potential to reduce high peaks of electricity demand, encourage off-peak charging and minimise the costs of electric vehicles to the electricity system.


Government announces review of WLTP and vehicle taxes

The Treasury has announced a review into the impact of the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP) on Vehicle Excise Duty and Company Car Tax. The LowCVP will be responding to the review for which the deadline for responses is Sunday 17 February.


Reports & Studies

Report advocates reserving public fast-chargers for battery-only vehicles A new report from the RAC Foundation finds that widespread confusion over how fast electric vehicles can be recharged could be undermining efforts to provide an adequate public chargepoint network. It concludes that some public access chargepoints should be reserved for battery-only vehicles rather than 'blocked' by plug-in hybrids which are unable to charge at a high rate. Meanwhile a separate report highlights the opportunities for recharging at commercial and industrial sites. Read more

Change in the LowCVP Secretariat team

The LowCVP secretariat team is sad to announce that Szilvia Libor, the Partnership's Membership Coordinator, will be leaving this Christmas to take up a role closer to her home. 


LowCVP seeks interest from coach industry in developing low emissions options The LowCVP is seeking expressions of interest and engagement from stakeholders in the UK coach industry who are interested in forming an 'interest group' that - under LowCVP's auspices - will work together to address common challenges in cutting both carbon and locally polluting emissions from the coach sector. Low Emission Taxi Workshop - 14/01/2019

The Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership is holding a 'Low Emission Taxi Workshop' to outline the range of low emission taxi technologies and fuels as well as to provide guidance on the provision of electric vehicle charging infrastructure. The event - which is free to delegates - is primarily targeted at local authority representatives and those otherwise involved in ensuring that taxi and private hire fleets become cleaner and greener.

Energy and Rural Business Show 2019 - 06/02/2019

For the latest advances in low emission vehicles in the rural sector don’t miss Energy and Rural Business Show 2019. The event which includes Energy Now Expo, Low Emission Vehicles Expo and Rural Business Expo is free to attend. LowCVP's Managing Director, Andy Eastlake, will be speaking at the Conference associated with the event.


UK Bus Summit 2019 - 06/02/2019

The 5th annual UK Bus Summit will take place in London on 6th February 2019. The UK Bus Summit is the premier bus event covering all parts of the UK. Held right at the heart of Westminster to elevate the importance of bus at the centre of local and national decision making. The event allows the opportunity to compare and contrast bus policy throughout England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. 


The Rushlight Show - 30/01/2019

The Rushlight Show is a leading event for anyone involved in cleantech and sustainability. The event includes and exhibiton and conferences, including an innovation showcase; a transport energy breakfast seminar; sustainability solutions market panel and, under the title 'Resource', discussions with over 20 leading participants in the circular economy.


Launch of 'white paper 4': Can natural gas reduce emissions from transport? - 28/01/2019

The Sustainable Gas Institute at Imperial College London, will be launching its fourth white paper which examines the global emissions of greenhouse gas emissions and air pollutants that come from both heavy goods vehicles and shipping, and the potential of natural gas to reduce emissions from current levels.
