Government pledges £106m for ZEV R&D as it hosts 'world first' ZEV Summit


Holding what was billed as the 'world's first' Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Summit in Birmingham on 11 September, the Government brought together over 500 international representatives from 40 countries to collaborate in the event. It was followed by a day in which international guests were invited to attend the Low Carbon Vehicle Event, held at Millbrook Proving Ground, to view practical demonstrations of the progress that the UK is making on this agenda.

Policy Developments

Electric Vehicle Energy Taskforce set up to tackle energy sector opportunities and impacts associated with the rise of electric vehicles The LowCVP will facilitate the Government’s new Electric Vehicle Energy Taskforce which was announced as a part of the ‘Road to Zero’ strategy in July. The anticipated growth in the use of electric and plug-in vehicles over the coming years will create challenges and exciting new opportunities for the rapidly evolving UK electricity supply system. £25m new Faraday battery challenge funding for future electric vehicles

The Government has announced a new £25 million funding competition which will offer grants to innovative businesses with projects to develop batteries for future electric vehicles. The competition is to support business-led research and development to improve batteries for automotive applications. Funding is provided by UK Research and Innovation and delivered by Innovate UK.


Government announces £2.5m funding for the LowCVP’s emissions-cutting retrofit scheme The Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership (LowCVP) welcomes today’s announcement that up to £2.5 million Government funding is being made available to increase the range of vehicle retrofit technologies capable of cutting emissions from larger road vehicles already in use and enable them to meet Clean Air Zone and ULEZ requirements.  Read more

Scottish Government makes £17m low emission transport pledge

The Scottish Government has announced £16.7 million additional funding to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the road transport sector. The additional money will be used to significantly increase the number of 'green' buses across the country and improve access to electric charging points in homes, businesses and public spaces.

Why bigger isn't always better; matching battery size with vehicle use is crucial for the environment, reveals a new report from the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership A new study by Ricardo for the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership (LowCVP) aims to push the boundaries of knowledge of Life Cycle Assessment, an increasingly important area of research in road transport. As new types and technologies of vehicles enter the market place and as electrification of road transport becomes mainstream, the ability to assess emissions ‘beyond the tailpipe’ to provide the basis for better regulation and more effective policies, will become more and more important. European auto sector must decarbonise rapidly to support Paris climate goal - report A new report by the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) for Greenpeace says that new petrol and diesel car sales in Europe must be phased out by 2030 if the sector is to contribute its part to meeting the Paris Climate Change Agreement's 1.5°C goal. According to the report authors, the motor industry will exhaust its 'carbon budget' within 5-10 years unless there is a radical shift. Read more

Vivergo announces bioethanol plant closure Vivergo, the UK's biggest producer of bioethanol has announced it will stop production at its plant near Hull in East Yorkshire. The company has been buying large quantities of wheat from farms in northern England and directly employs 150 people.  Read more

Lex Autolease announces £1m fund to incentivise EV purchase at ZEV Summit

Leasing giant Lex Autolease is launching a new fund to offer contributions of £1,000 towards the cost of 1,000 new pure electric vehicles. The company - the leasing arm of Lloyds Banking Group - made the announcement at the ZEV Summit, held in Birmingham on 11 September; an event  which the company sponsored.

LowCVP takes part in 'Government Pavilion', Low Emission Truckstop at LCV2018 event This year's Cenex-LCV2018 Event - of which the LowCVP is a supporting partner - was the biggest ever with nearly 4,400 visitors attending. This year the event also formed the second day of the ZEV Summit which took place in Birmingham the day before the first day of this year's LCV show. Read more
New 'Freight Portal' launched to provide advice on operators on cutting emissions A new 'Freight Portal' to provide advice and information to operators on how to improve efficiency with safer, more sustainable fleets has been created by the Energy Saving Trust as part of an initiative developed in partnership with the LowCVP and supported by the Department for Transport. Government to consult on green number plates for cleaner vehicles The Government plans to consult on a proposal for cleaner cars, vans and taxis to be equipped with green number plates as part of plans to promote awareness of ULEVs and support local measures to encourage their use.   Read more

Shell Springboard offers support for low carbon businesses

A total of £350,000 will be given to six winners of Shell Springboard 2019 for the implementation of the best, innovative low carbon business ideas.
