BEIS puts low carbon transition at the heart of Britain's industrial strategy


The Government has announced a wide-ranging industrial strategy which seeks to maximise the economic potential of the low carbon transition and which it says will address the long-term challenges to the UK economy. The strategy, issued in the form of a green paper or consultation document, is open for comments until April 17.

Government announces £20m funding for 20 low carbon freight projects

The Government has announced the winners of a £20m programme to cut carbon emissions and improve air quality in the freight sector which accounts for over 30% of the UK’s CO2 road transport emissions. Succesful projects include electric vans and lorries running on hydrogen dual-fuel.


£35m funding for low carbon vehicle R&D through APC7

The Advanced Propulsion Centre has announced up to £35m in collaborative research and development funding is available to take demonstrated on-vehicle technologies towards commercialisation in either on or off road vehicles.


Scotland targets 66% cut in climate emissions within 15 years

Scotland has presented ambitious plans to cut total climate emissions by 66% within 15 years in the third report on proposals and policies for meeting the country's annual greenhouse gas emissions targets. The plans will mean large reductions in reliance on fossil fuels for transport, energy and homes.


London to introduce ten new Low Emission Bus Zones to help tackle air pollution

The Mayor of London has announced plans to introduce ten more Low Emission Bus Zones, deploying the lowest emission buses on the capital's most polluted routes. The announcement brings the number of Low Emission Zones planned for London to twelve.

German government report finds total decarbonisation of the transport sector is possible

A report from a 10-year German government-led project spearheaded by the Öko-Institut has found that a total decarbonisation of the transport sector is possible. The ‘Renewbility’ project looked at solutions for all of Europe and its work was supported by German and Swiss-based research institutions.


New GFEI analysis says that fuel economy policies work, but more action needed

The Global Fuel Economy Initiative (GFEI) has published a new fuel economy benchmarking study which examines global progress in improving fuel economy over the decade to 2015. The report finds that fuel economy policies work but that more action is needed.

LowCVP report on emissions performance of innovative urban delivery vehicles published

Transport for London has published a report by the LowCVP in association with TfL's LoCITY initiative which provides the results of tests to develop a city-centre test cycle to measure the greenhouse gas and pollutant emission performance of various urban freight delivery technologies. TfL had commissioned the LowCVP to develop a representative test cycle and to assess the emissions performance of some emerging technologies relevant to urban and city-centre operations.


LowCVP's re-formed Commercial Vehicle Working Group to meet on March 1, Birmingham

The first formal meeting of the re-formed LowCVP Commercial Vehicle Working Group will take place at Edgbaston, Birmingham on the afternoon of Wednesday March 1st 2017, alongside the Freight in the City Summit 2017.


LowCVP report on gas-powered vehicles emissions tests published

A study for the DfT by the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership shows that dedicated gas commercial vehicles have potential to deliver significant GHG savings when a non-fossil, renewable or synthetic methane blend is used.

Trial of 20 Ford plug-in hybrid vans to take place in London

Transport for London is to trial 20 new plug-in hybrid Ford Transit Custom Vans as part of a new initiative supported by a £4.7m grant from the Advanced Propulsion Centre. The initiative will launch in the autumn of this year and aims to help improve air quality in the capital.


International Developments

China plans to quadruple EV production; record sales in 2016

Plug-in car sales in China were expected to exceed 350,000 and the country is now reported to have the largest EV fleet in the world. Manufacturers are rushing to boost EV production in China - which is expected to quadruple by 2020 - stoking fears of potential overcapacity. Meanwhile Tianjin, a major industrial city in north China has introduced 500 new electric buses, boosting its electric fleet to 1,346 vehicles.

GreenFleet has teamed up with LoCITY to showcase the latest in clean commercial vehicle technology. They have gathered key fleet and freight decision- makers together to let them on what products are available now, as they gear up for the expansion of London’s Ultra-Low Emission Zone (ULEZ).

The third annual UK Bus Summit will be held in London at the QEII Conference Centre, Westminster, supported by the Department for Transport.
