Hydrogen Fuel Cell

Hydrogen

Hydrogen buses are powered by an electric powertrain whereby fuel cells convert the chemical energy of hydrogen into electrical energy. Hydrogen is stored in compressed tanks, typically on the roof of the bus. Hydrogen fuel cell buses produce no tail-pipe emissions and is classed on ‘zero emission capable’.

Hydrogen can be produced from a variety of methods, including from fossil fuel based industrial processes to electrolysis of water using renewable electricity. The carbon intensity of hydrogen production needs to be considered when calculating WTW GHG emissions.
