Project Brief

Electrification of Public Transport in Cities (ELIPTIC) is a research project under EU project Horizon 2020 which aims to develop new-use concepts and business cases in order to optimise existing electric infrastructure and to support the uptake of electric vehicles. The project strengthens the role of electric-powered public transport in cities, leading to reduced fossil fuel consumption and improved air quality.

To achieve this goal, ELIPTIC will analyse 23 trials within 11 cities: Barcelona, Bremen, Brussels, Eberswalde, Gdynia, Lanciano, Leipzig, London, Oberhausen, Szeged and Warsaw. The project will support the discussion and exploitation of results by developing guidelines and tools for upgrading and regenerating electric public transport systems.

ELIPTIC also advocates for an electric public transport sector at the political level and thereby helps develop political support for the electrification of public transport across Europe. With a strong focus on end users, ELIPTIC trials will focus on three key areas:

  • Safe integration of e-buses into existing electric public transport infrastructure and upgrading trolley bus networks with 'better buses' or trolley hybrids and automatic wiring/de-wiring technology;

  • Smart energy management upgrade of electric public transport systems;

  • Multi-purpose use of electric public transport infrastructure e.g. for safe recharging of non-public transport vehicles.

Objectives

  • Absorb the project learnings within the current body of knowledge to inform and develop policy recommendations for electric buses and vehicles in city regions.
  • To disseminate the actions and results of the ELIPTIC project to the wider stakeholder community in the UK through LowCVP’s working groups and a UK Bus Summit event.

Deliverables and Dissemination
