Main areas of involvement in the low carbon transport agenda

UKPIA represents the interests of companies that operate oil refineries in the UK to the Government and the media. It covers all the refining and marketing interests of these companies. It also works in BSI and CEN to ensure that fuels specifications evolve as vehicles and fuels develop, as an oil industry focal point in emergencies and as a source of data on the UK refining and marketing industry and its products.

UKPIA has been a member of the LowCVP since it was formed and has supported/led the Fuels Working Group’s initial work on both greenhouse gas life cycle analysis and environmental sustainability criteria. Both these projects have been taken up by DfT funded consultants and are now being further developed

UKPIA acts as a focal point for passing information to the industry on the Renewable Transport Fuels Obligation (RTFO) and providing a response to Government on RTFO issues.

UKPIA has published reports on “Future Fuels” and “Delivering a Low Carbon Economy” as a contribution to the on-going debate on how emissions of greenhouse gases can be reduced from road transport and the economy.

Our member companies are active in developing a number of second generation biofuels processes which can utilise a wider range of feedstocks and give greater greenhouse gas savings that the current processes. A number of these processes will be at the demonstration phase in 2007. They are also active in developing hydrogen filling stations for possible use in the longer term.

UKPIA and its member companies are involved in a wide range of activities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transport including Fora - Low CVP, Powering Future Vehicles Strategy Review, CfIT Climate Change WG Studies - Concawe/Eucar/JRC Wells to Wheels study Fuels Standards – CEN considering increasing the biofuels allowed in petrol and diesel Process Development – second generation biofuels, hydrogen refuelling, carbon capture and storage
