Scientific evidence that our world is warming is unmistakable has been released in the ‘2009 State of the Climate’ report, issued by US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Meanwhile, a Dutch environmental agency reports that global CO2 emissions rose 3% in 2009, counter to earlier expectations. view more
The LowCVP welcomes the Government’s announcement of continued funding to support the initial purchase of electric vehicles. The announcement, which provides £43m support in 2011, will help to give an initial kick-start to the industry. The funding, which could help to support the purchase of at least 8500 electric vehicles, represents an ambitious target for EV sales in 2011. view more

The Department for Business has announced that six successful bidders will share £660,000 match funding from the Department for gas refuelling or electric vehicle charging infrastructure projects. The six include a private business in Essex, three councils across Yorkshire and the West Midlands, a public body co-ordinating transport in Merseyside and a community group on the Isle of Lewis. The bidders are all winners in the latest round of support from the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Grant Programme. view more

The Transport Secretary Philip Hammond has announced that the £5,000 grant scheme for electric and ultra-low carbon cars will go ahead in 2011. However, the Government has confirmed only £43m of the £230m earmarked for the scheme by the previous administration. A decision on the future of the incentive beyond March 2012 will be taken early that year. view more

Two studies published by T&E by Dutch consultancies TNO and CE Delft say that fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of vans can be cut much more quickly and cheaply than the European Commission's research suggests. The first study says that fitting less powerful and smaller engines has been an overlooked but quick and cheap option to reduce emissions. The second report suggests emissions can be cut even more by limiting a vehicle's maximum speed. view more

Proposals are now sought on subjects relating to low carbon and energy efficient transport policy and practice by the European Council for an Energy Efficient Economy (eceee) which will hold its 10th Summer Study in southern France in June 2011. The transport panel is one of eight energy efficiency-related panels which will comprise the Summer Study. view more
Over 200 people attended the LowCVP's Annual Conference and the first Low Carbon Champions Awards Dinner, held at Twickenham Stadium on 14-15 July. The event was addressed by Transport minister Norman Baker and included numerous announcements and launches by the LowCVP and partner organisations. The Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership has launched its search to find new low carbon technologies for heavy goods vehicles (HGVs). The RFA reports that almost 1.6 billion litres of biofuels has been delivered to the UK market in the last year, accounting for 3.33% of the total of the UK’s road transport fuel exceeding the Government’s target of 3.25%. This resulted in significant carbon savings of 51% compared to petrol and diesel. The news was presented by Nick Goodall at the LowCVP's Twickenham conference. view more

The Government has announced that over 150 new low carbon buses will join fleets throughout England as a result of an additional £15m funding, announced by Transport Minister Norman Baker. The Government says this will save around 50,000 tonnes of CO2. view more

A report by Dutch Agency CE Delft - 'Biofuels: indirect land use change and climate impact' - seeks to provide a methodology for evaluating the indirect land use (ILUC) impacts of biofuels. It shows that an ILUC factor of 60 grams of CO2 per million joules of biofuel would only allow production on, for example, abandoned land and degraded land, and also from biofuels from waste. view more

The Business Secretary Vince Cable says that the motor industry can no longer rely on support from Government to develop new low carbon products, such as that offered by the last Labour administration. The Coalition Government has, however, recently confirmed it will honour a £20m grant to support Nissan's EV production in Sunderland, a £360m loan guarantee for a Ford investment at Bridgend and a £270m offer to General Motors. view more
