The European Commission's has published a strategy for promoting the use of clean and energy efficient vehicles. The strategy links the future competitiveness of the European automotive industry to the rapid development of clean technologies. It contains over 40 actions in a wide range of policy fields with the first actions due to be taken this year. view more

GE and Nissan have signed a three-year Memorandum of Understanding to jointly research and develop the technology needed for 'smart charging' stations. The companies will be collaborating in research to examine what's needed in the home, in the car, and on the grid to bring EVs to market. view more

The French energy agency, ADEME, has published a report on the life-cycle impacts of first generation biofuels which concludes that environmental benefits should be obtainable. The report has been criticised, however, for being insufficiently focused on indirect land-use change impacts. A separate report compiled for the European Commission by the International Food policy Research Institute (IFPRI) concludes that indirect land-use change has an important effect on environmental sustainability but that current EU targets are small enough to safeguard the environmental impacts. view more

A majority of the EU's 27 member states operate car taxation systems based on CO2 levels according to the European car industry body, ACEA, which has just published its 2010 Tax Guide. The number of countries using CO2 as a basis for taxation is quickly increasing. More countries are also offering cash incentives for buying electric vehicles. view more

Hitachi and Airbiquity have announced a global partnership to develop new telematics systems aimed at plug-in vehicles. The partners say they will be able to establish a common system infrastructure for global services, providing vehicle connectivity and delivering essential EV-oriented services and other common applications. They say that their services can be tailored to the needs of the EV manufacturers, combined and delivered via a global, cooperative system. view more

A French company says it has developed a commercial-scale prototype of a solid-state hydrogen storage tank which it says can help overcome storage issues associated with the energy source. The system, claims McPhy Energy is a 'game-changing technology' as it can store hydrogen at low pressure in a short space of time. view more

Research by CE Delft, an independent Dutch environmental consultancy, finds that carbon dioxide emissions from road transport could be reduced by 30% if motorway speed limits in the Netherlands were set at 80 km/h. The findings suggest that CO2 reductions of 2.8 million tonnes for passenger cars, and a further 0.2mt for delivery vans would be achievable. view more

Renault, Nissan and Daimler have agreed a three-way, equity-sharing alliance to cooperate in the development of electric cars, small conventional passenger cars and light commercial vehicles. The deal will see the companies remain separate, but allow them to share technology and development costs including the creation of new forms of powertrain and engine that promise to enhance efficiency. view more

The RAC Foundation has published a new report which reviews the potential of low carbon vehicle technology for greening road transport. The report covers a range of technical and marketing/consumer acceptance issues including the attempts to improve the internal combustion engine and reduce vehicle weight as well as increasing market penetration of electric vehicles and the development of ultra low carbon fuels.The Foundation held a green transport event at which experts including LowCVP MD discussed the issues raised by the report. view more

The US and Canada have finalised the details of their first rules to crack down on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from road vehicles and have also strengthened fuel efficiency standards. The rules form part of President Obama's aim of cutting GHG emissions 17 percent by 2020. view more

The Department for Transport has published a carbon reduction delivery plan which sets out how the Government aims to deliver on its earlier strategy - Low Carbon Transport: a Greener Future - which was published in July 2009. The Department has also published a climate change adaptation plan for transport setting out how the UK's transport system will be prepared to adapt to future climate change. A newly released report from the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) says that EU biofuel policy could lead to a 6.5% increase in crop prices in Europe, assuming a 7% share of biofuels in transport by 2020. Meanwhile, an impact assessment by the EC's trade directorate highlights the risk to biofuel sustainability and environmental damage through the impact of indirect land use change (ILUC). view more

The Chancellor of the Exchequer has announced that the Government will set up a Green Investment Bank with a mandate to invest in low carbon infrastructure. Also in the 2010 Budget was the introduction of a tax incentive to encourage the introduction of ultra-low carbon cars and a delay in the introduction of fuel duty increases. The Budget preceded an announcement by the Department for Transport of further details of how £30m committed in the PBR will be spent to encourage low carbon transport. view more

Defra has opened a consultation to seek feedback on the update to Defra's Guidance on Green Claims that promotes the use of clear, accurate and relevant environmental claims on products, services or in marketing and advertising. Meanwhile, advertising trade bodies CAP and BCAP have launched new advertising codes which include some new guidance on environmental claims in advertising. view more

Transport for London has announced the establishment of a procurement framework worth over £70m to hasten the delivery of electric vehicles and charging points. The Mayor of London plans to order 1,000 electric vehicles for the GLA fleet and to secure the installation of 8,500 charging points. view more

If the EU is to meet its overall target of cutting total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 80% by 2050 then transport must reduce its emissions by 50-80% according to a report based on a project set up by the European Commission to look at GHG emission reduction scenarios. Even the most ambitious scenario developed so far would deliver a reduction of less than 60% by 2050. view more
