The LowCVP, Transport KTN and the Society for Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) are launching a study into the barriers to the uptake of low carbon technology in the Heavy Commercial Vehicle market. AEA Technology has been awarded the contract and will begin the study early in September.
This key study is the first activity to be undertaken in support of the Transport Secretary’s Strategic Task Force on Fuel Efficient, Low Emission Commercial Vehicle Technologies, emanating from the Logistics Growth Review of 2011.
The programme aims to build on the existing industry work to identify further opportunities for Low Carbon HGVs and related technology. It will work with the outputs from the Automotive Council on technology roadmaps but will focus on the user community needs and perspectives. The ultimate aim is to understand how the diverse HGV markets can be best supported in the drive to reduce their carbon impacts.
Heavy Commercial vehicles account for 13% of UK domestic transport greenhouse gas emissions, second only to the passenger car contribution. In 2011 there were over 560 thousand HGV’s operating on UK roads compared with over 31 million cars.
The Technology Strategy Board has recently announced a programme to fund low carbon truck demonstrations in the HGV sector. (See related story.) This collaborative study will incorporate knowledge gained from those trial partners.
