International Road Transport Union commits to voluntary 30% CO2 cut by 2030 More news

11 November 2009

The International Road Transport Union (IRU), which represents bus, coach and taxi operators in 74 countries, has voted to adopt a voluntary commitment to cut CO2 emissions by 30% by 2030. Unanimously adopted by the European Union's General Assembly in Geneva the IRU “30-by-30” Resolution will calculate the cut in terms of transport efficiency, by tonne and passenger-kilometres, using 2007 as the base year.

The IRU President, Janusz Lacny, said: “The IRU and it Members agreed today on an unprecedented commitment to reduce CO2 emissions within the next 20 years. After achieving a commendable reduction in toxic emissions by up to 98% over the last 20 years, which significantly helped improve air quality, the road transport industry is now ready to take up this new challenge and effectively contribute to ambitious CO2 reduction targets.”
