Low Carbon Emission Buses
Low carbon buses are defined by the Government as those producing 30% less emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) than a normal diesel bus, based on a methodology developed by the LowCVP. Though they are also significantly more fuel efficient, in 2009 they account for less than 0.2% of buses in the UK (and these almost all are operated in London).
The LowCVP's bus working group has been actively supporting Government to develop a policy framework to support the market introduction of these vehicles. This has resulted in the revision of the Bus Service Operators Grant (BSOG) to provide a level playing field for low carbon buses and the introduction of the Green Bus Fund to support the procurement of hundreds of these buses across England.
The LowCVP low carbon emission bus microsite has been created to provide bus operators, manufacturers and local transport authorities with a resource to assess, plan and implement the roll out of low carbon buses. The site provides information on;
- What is a low carbon bus?
- How does a bus manufacturer certify a low carbon emission bus?
- How do bus operators claim BSOG for low carbon emission buses?
- How do local authorities and bus operators bid for Green Bus Funding support?
- Which manufacturers supply low carbon emission buses?
- What can local transport authorities do to support low carbon emission buses?
- What developments are there in the market for these vehicles?
