Copenhagen conference ends with limited climate deal and much rancour

The long-heralded Copenhagen climate change conference ended with a limited deal struck between just five leading nations, not including the EU. The agreement, which is a non-binding statement of political intent, will be followed up in 2010 with further negotiations intended to clarify and firm-up the details on planned emissions cuts.

Government offers tax exemptions for EVs; £30m support for low carbon vehicles in PBR

In his Pre-Budget Report, the Chancellor announced that all electric cars will be exempt from Company Car Tax for 5 years and electric vans will be exempt from Van Benefit Charge for the same period. A 100 per cent first year tax allowance will also be provided for the purchase of electric vans subject to State Aid clearance. The PBR also has news of an additional £30m to support low carbon vehicle development, including an expansion of the Technology Strategy Board's ultra-low carbon vehicles competition.

Government announces winners of Green Bus Fund

The Department for Transport has announced the winners of the Green Bus Fund which aims to encourage bus operators and local authorities to buy new low carbon buses. The DfT says that the Fund will support the purchase of 349 vehicles which will operate in most of England's main cities and some rural areas by March 2012.

Arguments beginning over rules on 'eco-innovation' in EU Cars and CO2 regulations

The EU's industry committee has criticised the European Commission over draft rules for 'eco-innovation' measures through which car makers can claim CO2 credits towards their 2014 targets. The Commission is reported to be planning to limit the credit car makers can claim for each measure to 1g/km.

Government announces new £19m competition to encourage introduction of low carbon vehicles

The Business Secretary Lord Mandelson has announced a £19 million competition to support industry-led collaborative projects which focus on strengthening UK capability and developing the UK's supply networks for low and ultra low carbon vehicle projects.

Shell urges caution over introduction of advanced biofuels

The chief executive of Royal Dutch Shell said that advanced biofuels will not be in widespread use for 10 years or more. Peter Voser, who took over as head of Shell last summer, says it will take 'quite a number of years' before there is a commercially proven plant for advanced biofuels.

US report says EV prices to stay high due to high cost of Lithium-ion batteries

The US National Research Council says that the costs of plug-in hybrid electric cars are likely to remain high in the near future because of the high cost of the lithium-ion batteries used to power them. The new report says that the costs to manufacture plug-in hybrid electric vehicles in 2010 are estimated to be as much as $18,000 more than for an equivalent conventional vehicle.

New report for LowCVP evaluates the prospects for high blend biofuels

A new study for the LowCVP by Transport & Travel Research Ltd (TTR) looks at the opportunities for the the increased use of high blend biofuels - at blends greater than 10% by volume - in the UK. The study was set up to investigate the potential for high blend biofuel penetration, the associated commercial and environmental benefits as well as barriers, and to recommend the most appropriate mechanisms to stimulate take-up.

Government-Industry Automotive Council holds first meeting

At its first meeting in December, the Automotive Council agreed that its key objectives were to help make the UK a compelling investment proposition for the global automotive industry, promote the UK as a base for the development of low carbon vehicle technologies and to secure a strong UK supply chain.

2500 dealers signed-up to used car fuel economy label scheme

The Used Car Fuel Economy Label, launched to consumers by Transport Minister Sadiq Khan MP on 2nd November, is already proving popular with the UK’s motor dealers. By the end of November over 2500 dealers had signed-up on the Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA) website to participate in the used car labelling scheme, with over 30,000 labels downloaded for display on used cars.

Six small businesses at the leading edge of low carbon innovation in the automotive sector had the undivided attention of senior executives from global car companies at a LowCVP event chaired by Richard Parry-Jones, co-chair of the new Automotive Council. Axon Automotive, Brunel University, Controlled Power Technologies, EVO-Electric, Libralato and Oxy-Gen Combustion are today announced as the Winners of LowCVP’s Technology Challenge. Winning the Challenge provides these up-and-coming companies with the unique opportunity to pitch their ideas directly to industry leaders.

New book examines potential for lightweight, low carbon cars

A new publication - 'Cars Fit For Their Purpose: What they would be and how to achieve them' - examines how low carbon cars could soon be produced without major investment in technology.  The book, by Stephen Plowden and Simon Lister, includes detailed and practical recommendations for introducing less powerful, lighter weight cars. It attempts to show how safety can be improved at the same time as improving fuel consumption and cutting CO2 emissions substantially.
