European Commission tables strategy for clean and efficient vehicles

The European Commission's has published a strategy for promoting the use of clean and energy efficient vehicles. The strategy links the future competitiveness of the European automotive industry to the rapid development of clean technologies. It contains over 40 actions in a wide range of policy fields with the first actions due to be taken this year.

US and Canada finalise rules to cut greenhouse emissions from road vehicles

The US and Canada have finalised the details of their first rules to crack down on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from road vehicles and have also strengthened fuel efficiency standards. The rules form part of President Obama's aim of cutting GHG emissions 17 percent by 2020.

Car taxation in EU increasingly based on CO2 emissions - ACEA

A majority of the EU's 27 member states operate car taxation systems based on CO2 levels according to the European car industry body, ACEA, which has just published its 2010 Tax Guide. The number of countries using CO2 as a basis for taxation is quickly increasing. More countries are also offering cash incentives for buying electric vehicles.

Renault, Nissan and Daimler partner to develop electric cars and light commercial vehicles

Renault, Nissan and Daimler have agreed a three-way, equity-sharing alliance to cooperate in the development of electric cars, small conventional passenger cars and light commercial vehicles. The deal will see the companies remain separate, but allow them to share technology and development costs including the creation of new forms of powertrain and engine that promise to enhance efficiency.

Hitachi and Airbiquity team up to develop EV technologies

Hitachi and Airbiquity have announced a global partnership to develop new telematics systems aimed at plug-in vehicles. The partners say they will be able to establish a common system infrastructure for global services, providing vehicle connectivity and delivering essential EV-oriented services and other common applications. They say that their services can be tailored to the needs of the EV manufacturers, combined and delivered via a global, cooperative system.

Greenergy announces introduction of consortium to process biofuel from waste

Greenergy International Ltd has announced the formation of Scarab Distributed Energy Ltd to develop novel ways of producing fuel and power from waste, including industrial food waste. The company will bring together a consortium of interests to build and manage multiple distributed waste and biomass processing facilities at locations around the UK. Greenergy intends to purchase all of Scarab’s fuel.

Dutch study concludes speed limits could cut CO2 emissions by 30%

Research by CE Delft, an independent Dutch environmental consultancy, finds that carbon dioxide emissions from road transport could be reduced by 30% if motorway speed limits in the Netherlands were set at 80 km/h. The findings suggest that CO2 reductions of 2.8 million tonnes  for passenger cars, and a further 0.2mt for delivery vans would be achievable.

Report for French Government finds biofuels offer environment benefits but faces criticism on land-use effects

The French energy agency, ADEME, has published a report on the life-cycle impacts of first generation biofuels which concludes that environmental benefits should be obtainable. The report has been criticised, however, for being insufficiently focused on indirect land-use change impacts. A separate report compiled for the European Commission by the International Food policy Research Institute (IFPRI) concludes that indirect land-use change has an important effect on environmental sustainability but that current EU targets are small enough to safeguard the environmental impacts.

RAC Foundation report examines future options for low carbon vehicle technology

The RAC Foundation has published a new report which reviews the potential of low carbon vehicle technology for greening road transport. The report covers a range of technical and marketing/consumer acceptance issues including the attempts to improve the internal combustion engine and reduce vehicle weight as well as increasing market penetration of electric vehicles and the development of ultra low carbon fuels.The Foundation held a green transport event at which experts including LowCVP MD discussed the issues raised by the report.

Report on electric car trials in NE England identifies significant 'range anxiety'

Cenex, the UK’s first Centre of Excellence for low carbon vehicle technologies deployed four electric passenger cars in the North East of England with the aim of studying the integration of electric vehicles into fleets, accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles in the area and studying the efficiency and performance of the vehicles.

French company claims it has 'game-changing' hydrogen storage tank

A French company says it has developed a commercial-scale prototype of a solid-state hydrogen storage tank which it says can help overcome storage issues associated with the energy source. The system, claims McPhy Energy is a 'game-changing technology' as it can store hydrogen at low pressure in a short space of time.

The LowCVP hosted a series of seven, 35-minute seminars on greening transport as part of the major trade show Sustainabilitylive! 2010. The sessions covered topics ranging from greening fleets, greener business travel, smarter driving, electric vehicles, better freight transport and mobility without owning cars.

Members of the LowCVP secretariat presented details of the strategy, plans and past successes of the Partnership through a public webinar which can now be watched again through the LowCVP website. Activities and forthcoming projects of each of the LowCVP’s Passenger Cars, Fuels, Innovation and; Buses Working Groups were covered in detail during the on-line event.

The LowCVP Annual Conference and Awards Dinner 14-15 July 2010

The LowCVP's 2010 conference - which is now open for bookings - will take place on July 14-15 at Twickenham Stadium in west London. The event will, for the first time, include an Awards Dinner featuring the third WhatCar? Green Awards and the inaugural LowCVP Low Carbon Champions Awards in the evening of 14 July. The LowCVP conference has become a leading event on the environmental transport calendar, regularly attracting leading speakers and 200 or more high level delegates. This year's expanded event will offer more opportunities for delegates, exhibitors and sponsors.

TSB announces £8m funding for innovative solutions to transport and logistics challenges

The Government-backed Technology Strategy Board is investing £8m in projects designed to devise solutions to some of the UK's biggest transport and logistics challenges, including the need to ease congestion and reduce carbon emissions. The 12 collaborative research and development projects aim to develop innovative and sustainable systems and services that will help move goods around the country more effectively.
