Hammond says behaviour change needed to meet carbon targets

In a major speech on sustainable transport policy, the Transport Secretary Philip Hammond said that the Coalition Government is committed to the sustainability agenda in everything it does, including transport. He said that addressing the urgent and unavoidable challenges of climate change are a key part of ensuring sustainability. Speaking at an event organised by the Prince of Wales, START and IBM, Mr Hammond said that behaviour changes as well as technological advances will be needed to cut carbon emissions from transport.

Government announces plans for new local sustainable transport fund

Transport minister Norman Baker has announced plans for the introduction of a new fund to promote local sustainable transport initiatives. The amount of funds available will be announced in the spending review.

EC President and UK Energy Secretary promise green jobs boom

The Energy Secretary, Chris Huhne, told the LibDem Party Conference that the new Green Deal should create up to 250,000 jobs in domestic energy efficiency and related areas. In a separate announcement the EC’s President Barroso said that the EU must create 3 million green jobs within a decade.

Government announces criteria for plug-in car grants

The Government has set out the eligibility criteria for the plug-in car grant which it announced would go ahead – at least for a year – last month. Under the scheme motorists will receive a grant of up to £5,000 to purchase electric, plug-in hybrid or hydrogen fuelled cars.

Transport Secretary announces £24m to support TSB low carbon competition winners

Philip Hammond, the Transport Secretary has announced the award of £24 million to six innovative low carbon vehicle projects which were winners of a competition run by the Technology Strategy Board.

CfIT publishes series of reports on road journey patterns and climate policy implications

The Commission for Integrated Transport (CfIT) has published a series of reports intended to inform Government policy on appropriate interventions aimed at cutting carbon emissions. One of the main reports includes the first stage of a study exploring how medium-length journeys are likely to change over the next 20 years and the implications for environment-focused policies. The published reports also include a 'think-piece' on Transport and  Climate Change.

Report shows carbon reduction progress by car brand across Europe

Nearly all of Europe’s top 25 car brands reduced average new car CO2 emissions of cars sold in Europe in the first half of 2009 compared with 2008 according to a report by JATO Dynamics an auto industry market intelligence organisation.

HSBC report says low carbon cars market will grow very rapidly to 2020

The low carbon vehicle sector will grow even faster than the rapidly expanding renewables sector in the period to 2020 according to a report for investors by the leading bank HSBC. The report predicts that 8.65m electric vehicles and 9.23m plug-in and hybrid electric vehicles will be sold globally in 2020, up from around 5,000 and 657,000 respectively in 2009.

GHG emissions from transport could fall 89% by 2050 - EC report

Greenhouse gas emissions from transport in the EU could be reduced by 89% by 2050 compared with 1990 levels if all the options currently available are embraced with bold ambition, new research prepared by AEA for the European Commission shows.

Ultra-light vehicle maker wins top Automotive X Prize award

The 'Edison2 Very Light Car number 98', made by a Virginia-based company, was the winner of the 2010 Automotive X first prize. The Edison2 was awarded $5m for its use of lightweight materials, and superior aerodynamics. The Progessive X Prize foundation divided the $10 million prize fund between three teams out of 111 competing over the last 30 months to create a safe and effective production-ready vehicle capable of 100mpg.

Swiss researchers say Li-ion batteries for electric cars are 'greener' than expected

A team of Swiss researchers from the EMPA Institute says that li-ion batteries now increasingly used in electric vehicles have a lower environmental impact than previously thought. The researchers calculated the ecological footprints of electric cars fitted with li-ion batteries, taking into account many factors from production through its operation to its disposal, and then compared that information with that of gasoline cars.

European commercial vehicle manufacturers are developing an evaluation tool to calculate real-life CO2 emissions from trucks and buses ahead of purchase.

Greener Journeys launches campaign to encourage bus use with one million tickets giveaway

Greener Journeys, the bus industry campaign group which focuses on cutting CO2 emissions from transport, has launched its 'One Billion Challenge' with the goal of replacing a billion car journeys from the UK's roads and cutting the emissions of two million tonnes of CO2.

Transport Secretary speaks at LowCVP party conference fringe meeting

The Transport Secretary Philip Hammond was a speaker at a LowCVP/Greener Journeys fringe meeting held in association with Transport Times at the Conservative Party Conference in Birmingham on October 5.The LowCVP collaborated in a series of fringe meetings which took place at the Climate Clinic at each of this year's Party Conferences. The events were held on the theme: "Low Cost & Low Carbon – Delivering Sustainable Transport in an Age of Austerity".

LowCVP receives wide range of entries to HGV Technology Challenge

A wider range of entries were received to the LowCVP's Technology Challenge for trucks. Entries covered proposals for emissions reduction technologies from exhaust energy recovery, flywheel energy storage systems, vehicle hybridisation and dual-fuel systems amongst others.

Most EU states have no plans to raise biofuel use beyond 10% 2020 target

According to a survey by ENDS, most EU member states have no plans to raise biofuel use beyond the EU’s target of 10% in transport fuels by 2020. ENDS suggests this is a result of the uncertainty generated by conflicting reports over the effect of biofuels on land use, which have come to prominence this year.

Germany announces plans for car efficiency labelling; US EPA asks for feedback on proposed labels

A new energy efficiency label for cars has been proposed by the German economy ministry and is modelled on the equivalent label for household appliances. The German car industry has suggested the label could act as an exemplar for the rest of Europe, but doubts have been aired by environmental and consumer groups.

UK carbon gains illusory a carbon emitting activities have been 'exported' - Chief Environment Scientist

Professor Bob Watson, the Government's Chief Environment Scientist, says that when the carbon emissions 'embedded' in imported goods are taken into account, UK emissions of CO2 have increased by about 12 per cent since 1990 rather than falling 22% as official figures show.
