General Electric places World's largest ever order for electric vehicles

The US conglomerate General Electric has announced plans to buy 25,000 electric vehicles by 2015 for its own fleet and through its Capital Fleet Services business. In a statement, GE said it will initially purchase 12,000 vehicles from General Motors, beginning with the Chevrolet Volt in 2011, and then add vehicles from other manufacturers as carmakers expand their electric vehicle portfolios.

EC launches 'largest' investment programme for  projects demonstrating innovative low carbon technologies

The European Commission has issued a first call for proposals for the what it says is the world’s largest programme of investment in low carbon and renewable energy demonstration projects. The initiative, known as NER300, is a  financing instrument managed jointly by the European Commission, the European Investment Bank and Member States. Meanwhile, the Commission has also published a new report on alternative fuel options for the transport sector.

EC reconvenes CARS 21 High Level Group

The European Commission has reconvened the High Level Group of the Cars 21 initiative. The principal remit of the group will be to advise the Commission on the development of an effective EU industrial policy for the automotive sector and the implementation of the European strategy for clean and energy efficient vehicles.

London EV charging network to go live in Spring 2011

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, has announced the creation of a city-wide network of electric car charging points to support an anticipated 100,000 new electric vehicles on the streets of the capital. The network, Source London, aims to install 1,300 charging points across London by 2013 and will 'go live' in Spring 2011, fewer than the 7,500 originally proposed.

EU member states vote to weaken van CO2 targets proposed by Commission

European Union member states have voted to limit carbon dioxide emissions from vans and other light commercial vehicles to 155 grams per kilometre by 2020, a level significantly higher than that recommended by the European Commission.

Coalition publishes business plans for all departments of Government

The Prime Minister has published departmental business plans that set out in detail the work of government for the next four years. The plans include data such as financial information, Structural Reform Plans and departmental priorities and are to be refreshed every year and reported upon on a monthly basis.

Proposals for twenty-four local enterprise partnerships were given the go ahead by Government in a move that will see local business and civic leaders working together to drive sustainable economic growth and create new jobs in their communities.

Multi-national ecodriving trials show efficiency savings

Fiat has the revealed the results of a large scale trial of its eco:Drive technology which show average efficiency gains of 6% across nearly 6,000 users of the system which has been introduced to encourage ecodriving. Fiat says it has analysed data from 428,000 journeys made by 5,700 drivers across five different countries, including the UK.

EC publishes official figures for 2009 car CO2 emissions

Average CO2 emissions from new cars sold in the EU dropped by 5% in 2009, the biggest annual fall ever recorded, according to a report published by the European Commission. Meanwhile, T&E has published its latest report on the progress of individual car makers towards  the regulated targets for 2015.

New NGO report says biofuels impacts will be much worse due to indirect land-use effects

A new analysis by the Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP) for a group of leading environmental NGOs says that the increasing demand for biofuels in the UK and elsewhere will destroy more natural habitat and produce more CO2 emissions than previously estimated.

Industry coalition publishes report on the role of electric and fuel cell vehicles in future power-trains for Europe

A new report prepared by the consultants McKinsey for a broad consortium of car makers, fuel suppliers, equipment suppliers government and non-government bodies provides a detailed, fact-based analysis of the future options for power-trains in vehicles used in Europe. The report focuses, in particular, on battery, plug-in hybrid and fuel cell vehicles.

New web tool for comparing environmental performance of vans goes live

A new website - ecoVansA2Z - has been launched which is dedicated entirely to low carbon and zero emission light commercials, as well as the products and services designed to improve efficiency and reduce fuel consumption. The launch follows the introduction of VansA2Z and the new site has all the functions of the original site but concentrates on environmental issues, products and services.

EU funding secures more hydrogen buses for London

Transport for London has secured €5.67m European Commission funding to acquire three additional hydrogen hybrid fuel cell buses, allowing the operator to run an entire London bus route with hydrogen-powered vehicles.
