Government announces a Carbon Plan; includes installation of thousands of charging points

The Coalition Government has announced its Carbon Plan - a cross-Government action plan on climate change which is backed by the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister. The Plan sets strict actions and deadlines for Government departments including domestic and international activity. It sets out department-by-department, actions and deadlines for the next 5 years.

Government's biofuels regulatory body closes

The Renewable Fuels Agency, the body charged with regulating biofuels entering the UK market and encouraging their sustainability will cease operations on 31 March, an outcome of the Coalition Government's wider review of arms-length bodies. The duties of the RFA will be transferred to the Department for Transport.

EC plans to halve use of oil and gas-fuelled cars in cities by 2030 and remove them by 2050

The European Commission plans to halve the use of oil- and gas-fuelled cars in urban areas by 2030 and “phase them out by 2050”, according to a new EU ‘road map’ for future transport policy.

Budget 2011 – Chancellor scraps fuel duty escalator, announces duty cut

The main rate of fuel duty was cut by 1p a litre and the fuel duty escalator was scrapped and replaced by a ‘fair fuel stabiliser’ in Chancellor George Osborne’s first Budget for the Coalition Government. The Chancellor also announced the establishment of a Green Investment Bank with initial funding of £3bn to support and stimulate investment by sustainable and low carbon businesses.

EC report concludes that raising emissions cut targets would be cost effective

In a long-awaited report, the European Commission has concluded that reducing the bloc’s carbon emissions by 25 per cent by 2020 would be more cost effective over the long term, but the Commission has stopped short of raising its target from the current 20 per cent level which was agreed in 2008.

Most Europeans say they’re willing to compromise on car price and features to cut emissions – EC survey

A survey conducted by Euro-barometer for the European Commission of nearly 26,000 people in all 27 EU member states found that most Europeans are willing to compromise on the price and the features of their car in order to reduce harmful emissions.

NGO report challenges carbon impact of African woodland clearance to grow Jatropha

Using biofuels sourced from some Kenyan jatropha plantations will result in significantly greater carbon emissions of fossil fuels according to an RSPB/ActionAid/Nature Kenya report. However, a senior BP Executive has told a London Conference that biofuels is ‘the only game in town’ when it comes to decarbonising the transport sector. He said that legislators and consumers should focus on distinguishing well-produced biofuels rather than ruling out production altogether.

Transformation to electrified road transport will require stakeholder collaboration of ‘massive complexity’ – ICCT report

The introduction of electric vehicles on a large scale will demand collaboration between government, industry, other stakeholders, and the public. A new report by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) says: “to call the task complex is a massive understatement”. Meanwhile, the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) has also published a report focusing on EV uptake and recommends seven actions to bring about a change in consumer perceptions of EVs.

New car CO2 emissions fell 3.5% in 2010 and over 20% since 2000 - SMMT report

Emissions of new cars fell to an average of 144.2g/km CO2 (equivalent to 50mpg) and by 3.5% in 2010 according to the SMMT's 10th annual CO2 report. Average CO2 emissions from new cars have fallen by over 20% since 2000.

Car buyers' interest in CO2 emissions increasing - HPI research report

Awareness of CO2 emissions figures by used car buyers is on the increase according to research published by used car data company HPI. HPI research shows that between 2007 and 2010 there was a 52 percent increase in the number of car dealers who say that the CO2 emissions of a model have influenced potential car buyers, and 93 percent say that shoppers want to know this information before they buy.

Consultations on proposals to implement the transport elements of the Renewable Energy Directive and the greenhouse gas saving elements of the Fuel Quality Directive have been opened by the Government.

CBI study puts consumer information at centre of 'green' economy

Ensuring consumer buy-in is essential to growing a low carbon economy according to a new report published by the CBI. The report says that consumers remain, however, largely indifferent to many green and energy-efficient products.

Raconteur Media has published over 710,000 copies of a supplement entitled 'The Future of Transport' which was carried in The Times this week. The supplement was produced in association with the LowCVP who provided advice and contacts. The LowCVP Managing Director, Greg Archer, contributed an article to the publication.

Low carbon vehicle R&D projects receive £10m government funding

The UK Department for Business has announced that The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) is to provide £10million funding for three major projects to address fundamental research questions in developing low carbon vehicles. The projects have been developed by EPSRC with the Technology Strategy Board (TSB) through the Low Carbon Vehicle Innovation Platform Integrated Delivery Programme.

Ninety new hybrid buses will be deployed in London during 2011 in some of central London's air quality hotspots (including Marylebone Road and Edgware Road) as part of efforts to improve the capital's air pollution and reduce carbon emissions.

Geneva Motor Show features world firsts in new 'Green Pavilion'

This year's Geneva Motor show, which ran from 3 to 13 March, again featured a significant proportion of 'green' vehicles, including several world firsts. In addition to the individual exhibitors, a 3,000-sq. metre Green Pavilion showcased the latest developments from 36 exhibitors presenting up to 17 world premieres.
