Number of low carbon cars sold in the UK doubled in 2010

 

The number of low carbon cars - in Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) Band A - doubled to more than 57 thousand in 2010, compared with 2009, according to the latest vehicle licensing statistics published by the Department for Transport.

Roadmap for UK CO2 reductions from heavy goods vehicles published

The Automotive Council has published a roadmap proposing a long-term strategy aimed at helping manufacturers of commercial vehicles and construction equipment move to low carbon solutions.

Government announces allocation of £46m funding for 542 new low carbon buses

542 new low carbon buses will appear on England's roads by March 2012, thanks to over £46m allocated under the Green Bus Fund by the Department for Transport. All the English regions will benefit with funds being paid to 20 bus operators and 6 local authorities.

European Council approves first CO2 emission standards for small vans

The European Council of Ministers has formally approved the first CO2 emission standards for small vans in the EU. The law introduces a limit of 175g CO2/km for the average CO2 emissions from light commercial vehicles registered in the EU.

LowCVP to showcase 'British engineering excellence' at international Bibendum exhibition

The LowCVP is coordinating an exhibition to showcase some of the best examples of British engineering innovation for cutting road transport carbon emissions at Michelin's Challenge Bibendum, to be held in Berlin during May. The LowCVP is working with partner organisations - mainly SMEs - to help nurture the UK's low carbon supply chain.

The LowCVP participates in high level Chinese workshop on vehicle CO2 policy issues

The LowCVP’s Deputy Director, Jonathan Murray, took part in a high level workshop with representatives from the Chinese government on the 14-15 April 2011, in Beijing. The workshop, entitled ‘China Vehicle Fuel Consumption Regulation and Fiscal Policies’ was co-organized by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) and the China Automotive Technology and Research Centre (CATARC).

Current UK and European policies on biofuels 'encourage unethical practices' says new report

A report by the Nuffield Council on Bioethics says that the European Renewable Energy Directive, amongst other policies to promote biofuels, is weak when it comes to protecting the environment, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and avoiding negative social impacts. The report, produced after an 18-month inquiry, says that policies also include few incentives for the development of new biofuel technologies that could help avoid these problems.

ICCT report analyses relative effectiveness of national tax policies in cutting CO2

A new report by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) evaluates eight national tax policies for passenger vehicles which influence CO2 emissions in an attempt to determine a best practive framework for policy design. The UK's policy is in third place in the inter-country policy comparisons in terms of the price signal implied by currently applicable taxes on vehicles.

IEA  'roadmap' says biofuel production could increase greatly without threatening food security, environment

A new report from the International Energy Agency (IEA) says that the widespread deployment of biofuels can play an important role in reducing CO2 emissions in the transport sector and enhancing energy security, when produced sustainably.

WWF-UK report says rapid EV uptake necessary if UK is to reach climate targets

A new report by WWF-UK says that at least 1.7 million electric vehicles (EV) will be needed by 2020 and 6.4 million by 2030 if the UK is to achieve its climate change targets. The report "Electric avenues: Driving home the case for electric vehicles in the UK" says that under the most optimisic scenario, the UK could avoid spending over £5bn a year in oil imports.

A new Technology Strategy Board scheme is offering funding to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to engage in R&D projects in the strategically important areas of science, engineering and technology, from which successful new products, processes and services could emerge.

Nanotechnology innovation for hydrogen storage scoops Shell Springboard top award

An invention by Cella Energy which uses nanotechnology to store hydrogen safely in tiny micro-beads and then release it to fuel cars, lorries, ships or planes has been awarded the Shell Springboard 2011 top prize. Storing hydrogen in this way means that it can be safely transported in micro-bead form opening the door to it being available at petrol stations for consumers.

EP-UK introduces tyre procurement guides for fleets following launch of Campaign for Better Tyres

Following the launch of a new campaign to convince drivers that they can save money on fuel and cut emissions by as much as 10 per cent by choosing better tyres, Environmental Protection UK (EP-UK) has published procurement guides to help truck, van and car fleet managers in their choice of tyres for their fleets.

Challenge Bibendum - 18-22 May 2011, Berlin
18th May 2011

Michelin's 11th Challenge Bibendum will take place at Berlin's Airport Tempelhof on 18-22 May 2011. The event will showcase a large exhibition of low carbon vehicles, fuels and related technologies. 4,000 stakeholders are expected to attend the event including representatives of governments, universities, NGOs and the vehicle industry.
