Budget 2012 - Chancellor seeks to encourage green fleets but raises concerns for the future of electric vehicles

The Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, has sought to encourage the move to more efficient and lower carbon fleets by extending the 100% first year enhanced capital allowance for low emission business cars for two years to March 2015 whilst tightening the CO2 eligibility threshold to 95g/km from April next year, down from 110g CO2/km currently.

Government announces winners of third round of Green Bus Fund

The Department for Transport has announced the winners of the third round of the Green Bus Fund. £31 million will be spent on 439 low carbon buses including hybrid, fully electric and gas buses in the next two years.

Low Carbon Truck Demonstration Trials - full details announced.

The Technology Strategy Board and the Department for Transport (DfT) are to invest a total of £9.5m to encourage and assist UK road-haulage operators to buy and use low carbon medium and heavy-goods vehicles.

Government publishes policy statement on local bus market in England

The Department for Transport has published a new policy statement on the local bus market in England (outside London) and sets out a series of reforms to improve local bus subsidy and regulation in England. The Government says that the proposals will attract more people onto buses, to ensure better value for the taxpayer and to give local transport authorities more influence over their local bus networks.

Analysts report 3.4% fall in EU new car CO2 in 2011 vs 2010

Jato Dynamics, the automotive sector analysts, has reported a 3.4% fall in average European new car CO2 emissions to 136.1g CO2/km in 2011. The firm's preliminary data indicates that 30% of new cars sold are emitting 120g CO2/km or less.

Volkswagen surprises lobbyists with 30% carbon cut commitment

Volkswagen has announced plans to reduce its carbon emissions to 120 grams of CO2 per kilometre by 2015, a full 10 grams below the EU’s target and by 30% overall in the 2006-15 period. The announcement surprised lobbyists who have recently been critical of VW's stance on emissions reductions.

Nissan to produce ultra-low carbon concept vehicle at Sunderland plant

Nissan has announced plans to manufacture its new 'ultra-low' carbon concept car, the Invitation, at its UK plant in Sunderland. The car will begin production in 2013, creating 2000 new jobs in the factory and supply chain.

Geneva Motor Show's 'Green Vision' pavilion showcases latest in low carbon vehicles

The Geneva Motor Show, which took place from 8 to 18 March, again showcased several new low carbon vehicles and concepts in its 'Green Vision' Pavilion which featured 7 world premieres. As part of a 'Green Trials' zone, 13 different brands presented a total of 19 different electric vehicles for test drive experiences.

LowCVP webinar series: Shifting buyer preferences to low carbon cars - recordings available to view now
3rd May 2012

Recordings of three LowCVP webinars focusing on measures that can be taken to accelerate the shift in car buyer attitudes in favour of lower carbon cars are now available. The three webinars were intended to provoke a debate amongst stakeholders and to inform a scoping study to be prepared by the LowCVP on this topic.

Transport Select Committee to undertake inquiry into low carbon vehicles

The House of Commons Transport Select Committee has announced that it will undertake an inquiry into low carbon vehicles. The influential Committee, which comprises a cross-party group of MPs chaired by Louise Ellman MP will look, in particular, at the potential for plug-in vehicles to contribute to decarbonising transport and Government action to facilitate this.

ETI’s £40 million Heavy Duty Vehicle Efficiency Programme launched by Government

The Energy Technologies Institute’s (ETI) new £40 million heavy duty vehicle efficiency programme has been officially launched by Business Secretary Vince Cable. The ETI programme is designed to look at both systems integration and technology development across the HDV sector with the aim of increasing the efficiency of land and marine vehicles by up to 30 percent.

Coca-Cola releases biomethane vehicle trial report

Coca-Cola Enterprises (CCE) has invested in 14 Iveco Stralis gas vehicles running on biomethane and a gas refuelling station at their depot in North London following a twelve month trial to test the technology. Coca-Cola says that the vehicles should save over 300 tonnes of CO2 per annum.

Innovations could be in the areas of personal or public transport, systems and supporting infrastructure. The Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) which comprises the World's leading scientists is now more than 90% sure that human-caused global warming will increase the length, frequency and intensity of extreme weather events such as heatwaves.

The Energy Saving Trust launched a 'Plugged-in Fleets Initiative' under which it is inviting applications from fleets to receive free analysis to help businesses understand the potential benefits of electric vehicles specific to their own fleet.
